"I went to see Dr. Zimmer about 5 years ago because I’d worn out the cartilage between my foot and ankle. It was like a 24-hour-a-day toothache. He performed surgery to fuse my foot and ankle together. I lost a little mobility but it relieved the pain and improved my quality of life, so it was well worth it. (By the way, Dr. Zimmer performed this procedure mid November and the following May I went to Scotland and played 10 rounds of golf in 10 days, and walked every round.)

I also want to mention that the staff at Commonwealth Orthopedic Specialist is great. When you walk into the practice, everyone you come into contact with is superb. They’re there to help you, take care of your problem and give you a speedy recovery. Dr. Zimmer is right on top of it, too, and couldn’t be better as a doctor or a person."

"I had crippling pain in my right ankle from a car accident in 2001. I’m on my feet all day in my job, and it had gotten to the point that I was walking sideways because of the pain. I’m normally a very athletic person, so this was incredibly debilitating.

By the time I saw Dr. Zimmer in 2005, I’d tried everything – physical therapy, cortisone shots, you name it – and nothing worked. He recommended ankle fusion surgery. The position of the fusion will determine whether the surgery is successful or not, and Dr. Zimmer positioned my foot perfectly. Now, I ride a bike, swim and snow ski with no pain. (It even helped my golf swing by improving my hip rotation!) After the surgery, I can still walk 18 holes on the golf course, carrying my golf bag.

On a scale of 1 to 10, the pain was a 12. Now the pain is gone, thanks to Dr. Zimmer."

"I had ankle problems from a number of injuries dating back to childhood. It was an arthritic condition – bone-on-bone, essentially. The pain was prohibitive, and there was no joie de vivre when I was on my feet. My doctor recommended Dr. Zimmer, saying he was the best 'ankle man' in Richmond.

Dr. Zimmer performed surgery to fuse the ankle in March, 2010. From the beginning, the process was very efficient and my healing timeline has been exactly how he described it. The pain from the surgery has been far less than with the original condition. After the first day post-surgery, I haven’t taken any pain medication at all. I have about six weeks of recovery left but I’ve progressed well and think it will turn out fine."

"I went to Dr. Zimmer with a Morton’s Neuroma, a small benign tumor of a nerve in my foot. It was very painful and felt like a knife was being stuck between my toes. Dr. Zimmer performed surgery in February 2010 to remove it.

Dr. Zimmer is a very gentle person. He put my mind at ease and was very focused on taking care of me. The whole experience was wonderful – if you can call surgery wonderful – from Dr. Zimmer and his staff to the surgical staff that worked with him at the Stony Point Surgical Center.

When I went for my post-surgical checkup, I told Dr. Zimmer what a great job he’d done and how excited I am not to have to deal with this problem anymore. I’m doing great, and the surgery was just three months ago!"

"I first saw Dr. Zimmer about 12 years ago for horrendous pain with plantar fasciitis ... The end result - pain free and no more issues. Fast-forward to October 2009. Years of wearing mega-stilettos ruined my feet and I developed a severe bunion on the left foot ... the pain was awful ... Dr. Zimmer's initial examination was extremely thorough ... When it's time to have the right foot operated on ... I will definitely return to Dr. Zimmer and his team, and highly recommend them to anyone needing foot or ankle surgery. The care is bar none."
